If you’re a K-drama enthusiast like me, you know the struggle of committing to a long-running series. Will it be worth your time? Will it drag? Will it keep you hooked? These questions are even more pressing when the drama crosses the 40-episode mark.
But sometimes, you stumble upon a show like Iron Family that, despite its quirks and occasional cringe, manages to hold your attention till the very end. So, was Iron Family worth the watch? My answer is a resounding yes.
I won’t lie—when I first saw that Kim Jung Hyun was starring in a weekend family drama, I did a double take. I mean, Mr. Queen was a massive hit, and seeing him take on a family drama was unexpected. But curiosity got the best of me, and I found myself diving into the chaotic world of Iron Family. And guess what? It was hilariously absurd yet oddly entertaining.
Plot Overview

“Iron Family” centers around Lee Da Rim, the youngest in a family running a humble laundry and ironing business. Diagnosed with a rare eye condition at 14, Da Rim is determined to experience life to the fullest before her vision fades completely. That’s where Seo Gang Ju enters, a wealthy heir with whom she shares a spontaneous and unforgettable night. Years later, fate brings them back together, and their story unfolds inbetween all the family chaos, hidden fortunes, and unexpected twists.
A Story That’s as Chaotic as It Is Engaging

It started with a bustling household filled with quirky characters. Iron Family is a classic weekend family drama that explores love, relationships, and the chaos of everyday life – That’s what I thought! But everything starts to fall out of place when oldies decides to dug out some stolen money.
From the very beginning, I liked the storyline—especially the love line between Gang Ju and Da Rim. Their interactions had me laughing at the sheer absurdity of it all. It was meme-worthy, cliché, and sometimes downright cringy, yet somehow, I couldn’t stop watching.
It’s one of those dramas where you sit back and think, What am I even watching? And yet, you keep going, because despite the madness, it’s genuinely entertaining.
Personal Reflections
- A Love Line That Keeps You Hooked: The chemistry between Gang Ju and Da Rim is electric. Their relationship is filled with hilarious misunderstandings, heartfelt moments, and yes, a fair share of clichés. But honestly? It’s these very clichés that had me grinning and eagerly hitting ‘Next Episode.’ Their moments are always directed and visualised beautifully.
- Meme-Worthy Moments Galore: There were times I paused just to laugh out loud or screenshot a scene because it was pure meme material. The series doesn’t shy away from over-the-top humor, and while some might find it cringy, I found it endearing and refreshingly self-aware.
- Gang Ju: The Charm Factor: Kim Jung Hyun’s portrayal of Gang Ju is a standout. He brings a charm to the character that’s irresistible. Whether he’s being adorably clueless or showing unexpected depth, Gang Ju quickly became my favourite character in the series.
The Performances In Iron Family
The cast delivers across the board. Geum Sae Rok shines as Da Rim, capturing her resilience and vulnerability beautifully. The supporting characters add layers of humor and heart, making the world of “Iron Family” feel lived-in and relatable.
Characters That Shine (and Some That Don’t)

- Gang Ju (Kim Jung Hyun) – This character is pure charm. Every scene he’s in is engaging, and his comedic timing is top-notch. There are moments when he completely steals the show, making even the most ridiculous scenarios feel amusing.
- Da Rim (Geum Sae Rok) – As a lead, she holds her own well, especially in the dynamic with Gang Ju. Their chemistry makes the romance feel fresh, despite the usual family drama tropes. Plus girl is just soooo cute from beginning to end.
- Cha Rim & Da Rim’s Aunt – Now, this is where things slow down. These characters felt a little too dull, and their arcs weren’t nearly as engaging as the rest of the drama. Every time they were on-screen, I found myself waiting for the scene to end.
- Lee Da Rim’s Mother (Park Ji Young) and Gang Ju’s Mother (Kim Hye Eun) – Easily one of the best performances in the drama. While Ji Young adds depth to her role, making every emotional moment count. Hye Eun gave the light towards other extreme, a greedy mother. Definitely not easy to play. So are the elders Kim Young Ok and Park In Hwan, the stealers (literally, lol).
Iron Family: A Rollercoaster of Insanity

Let’s talk about the craziest parts of the drama—because trust me, there are plenty.
- Old couples stealing money? Check.
- Ridiculous family feuds that escalate beyond logic? Check.
- Cute hilarious loveline? Check.
Every episode had something that made me pause and go, Did that really just happen? And yet, these absurd plotlines were exactly what made the drama so fun to watch.
Final Thoughts
So, is Iron Family worth watching? If you love family dramas with a mix of comedy, absurdity, and endearing characters, then absolutely. Yes, there are some slow moments, and yes, some storylines make you roll your eyes, but it’s all part of the charm.
This drama doesn’t take itself too seriously, and maybe that’s why it works. It’s the kind of watch where you laugh, cringe, and question your life choices—but at the end of the day, you don’t regret it.
Would I watch another long family drama like this? Only if it has the same level of insanity and charm as Iron Family.
