5 Must-Visit Places Around Tirusulam Airport

Top 5 places in Tirusulam

If you had asked me a few years ago what I thought about living close to Tirusulam’s surroundings, I would’ve complained about the lack of shops. Whether it’s Zamin Pallavaram or Tirusulam we always to travel far just to buy essentials. Compared to the bustling city of Chennai, my home felt like a forgotten village. But life has a way of changing your perspective.

It all started when my friend (who’s sadly no longer with us) once came to visit me to give Christmas treats. I still remember the first time I took him to my rooftop. As he stood there, soaking in the view of lush hills, greenery, and the freedom of noise pollution, his eyes widened. He looked at me and said, “How lucky you are to live in such a beautiful place.” Those words have stayed with me ever since. It took someone else’s awe for me to truly appreciate the natural beauty around me.

What I once felt like an inconvenience is now a blessing to me. The only issue here is dust pollution because of Quarrying. Living near Tirusulam isn’t just about convenience, with its proximity to the airport, metro, and suburban railway—it’s also a gateway to some of the most serene and spiritual places around Chennai. So, let me take you on a journey through the place that I now cherish. Here are 5 must-visit places around Tirusulam Airport that will make you see this area in a whole new light.

1. Tirusulam Hills: Nature’s Best-Kept Secret

Distance from Airport: ~2 km

If you’re someone who craves peace and quiet, you must visit Tirusulam Hills. I have previously wrote an entire blog on it (sharing below). Growing up, I took these hills for granted, but they’ve now become one of my favorite escapes. Even a glance at it makes your heart feel light. Imagine standing on top of a hill, the air fresh and crisp, watching the city of Chennai stretch out before you. The best part? You can see the airport from here, watching planes take off while surrounded by nature—it’s a strange but magical mix of calm and excitement.

Yes! True to its name, this place feels like a secret you’re lucky to stumble upon. Tucked away amidst trees and greenery, it’s the kind of place you can go with your friends when you need to escape the noise and just… breathe.

The lake is perfect for a quiet mornings and evenings. If you’re into photography, you’ll find plenty to capture: the reflections on the water, the birds, the stillness. It’s a spot that makes you forget you’re just a few kilometers away from one of the busiest airports in India. I’ve come here a few times just to sit by the water, letting the calmness wash over me. Trust me, this is a spot you don’t want to miss. But since its a secluded place make sure to come with your gang, not alone.

3. Tirusulnathar Temple: Where History and Spirituality Meet

Distance from Airport: ~3 km

Tirusulnathar Temple holds a special place in my heart, not just because of its spiritual significance and nostalgia, but also because of the history embedded in its walls. This ancient Shiva temple, built by the Chola king Kulothunga I in the 11th century, is a testament to our rich cultural heritage. As a child, visiting this temple always feels calming, like stepping into world of silence—a world where time slowed down and every stone had a story to tell. My dad and mom used to take me here often. Recently they also had Kumbabishegam which happens every 12 year.

Kumbabishegam: A Consecration Ceremony that is performed in South Indian temples to sanctify new temples or to re-consecrate old ones. It is a ritual that involves pouring water mixed with sacred ingredients like milk, curd, honey… etc over the top of the temple’s gopuram (tower). The ceremony is believed to bring divine energy into the temple. It is often a grand event with lots of devotees swarming the temple.

There are so many beliefs that surrounds this place. Even if you aren’t religious, the peaceful atmosphere and the intricate carvings of this temple will captivate you. There’s something grounding about being in a place that has seen centuries of devotion, a place that continues to stand tall, offering solace to all who visit.

4. Patchaiamman Temple: A Spiritual Retreat in the Forest

Distance from Airport: ~5 km

If you’re looking for a more sacred spot with stunning background, then Patchaiamman Temple is the place to go. Nestled in centre of Tirusualm surrounded by hills, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Patchaiamman, and it’s believed that the water bodies around it have healing properties. This temple gives a mystical feel—almost like you’ve stepped into a different world, far away from the chaos of the city. During Aadi Thiruvizha, the entire place will become like a festival of lights and laughter. The entire surrounding becomes a celebration zone. This temple is also part of lots of folklore which I heard since I was a kid. Plus it has also featured in many movies.

I love to attend the festival every year, now there are some renovation happening for Kumbabishegam so the festival got canceled. It is also a best place to reflect and recharge. If you’re looking for a spiritual retreat, this is where you’ll find it.

5. Aerohub Mall: For the Modern Traveler

Distance from Airport: less than 0.5 km

I get it, not everyone is into nature or temples, and that’s okay. If you’re someone who enjoys shopping or wants a more modern experience, then Aerohub Mall is just around the corner. With a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, it’s the perfect place to unwind before or after your flight. Its comparatively a smaller mall, but it is suitable for chilling with your friends and doing some work as well, if you don’t mind crowded noisy places to work.

I’ve often found myself here, grabbing a quesadilla or browsing through stores when I have some downtime. It’s convenient, comfortable, and has everything you need in one place—perfect for a quick break or movie time at PVR.

Bonus Stop: Pallavaram Sandhai – A Friday Tradition

Distance from Airport: ~2 km

If you’re in the area on a Friday, make sure to visit the Pallavaram Sandhai(Market). This traditional market, close to the Tirusulam gate, is an experience in itself. Every Friday, vendors gather to sell everything from fresh vegetables and fruits to clothes and household items. There’s a charm in its chaos, a glimpse of the everyday lives of locals.

Walking through the market, I’m reminded of how important these spaces are for the community. It’s a lively, vibrant atmosphere that you won’t find in any mall or shopping center. If you want to experience a true local tradition, this is it.

Bonus: Geetham Restaurant – A Vegetarian’s Delight

Distance from Airport: ~2 km

If you love vegetarian food as much as I do, then Geetham Restaurant near PVR Grand Galada is a must-visit. Their South Indian vegetarian dishes are bursting with flavor, and the cozy atmosphere feels like home. From crispy dosas to comforting Kunafas, Geetham offers a delightful range of dishes that showcase the best of fusion cuisine. Kashmiri Naan is a must try. My friend introduced me it. Other than that, Malai Kofta, Stuffed Mushroom, and Dragon roll are quite good.

Whenever I’m in the mood for a wholesome, satisfying meal, Geetham never disappoints. It’s the perfect spot to fuel up after a day of exploring the nearby attractions.

The Unseen Struggles: Tirusulam’s Development Gap

While Tirusulam has its natural beauty and spiritual significance, it’s heartbreaking to see the lack of development in certain areas. The airport and its surroundings are well-developed, with metro lines, smooth roads, and modern facilities. But the other side of Tirusulam, the side where locals live, is still lagging behind.

There isn’t a subway or a foot-over bridge to connect people safely to the railway station, and as a result, residents have to dangerously cross the tracks to get to the other side. Sadly, this has led to several accidents over the years. Despite the obvious need for infrastructure, neither the government nor the railways have taken action. It’s a stark reminder that development often prioritizes the convenience of the upper class, while the needs of everyday people remain overlooked. And that’s the reality many of us face.

Despite its challenges, I now take pride in my town, in its beauty, its history, and its potential. Tirusulam may not have the glitzy allure of a big city, but it offers something more—a quiet charm, a connection to nature, and a sense of history that’s hard to find anywhere else. The next time you find yourself near the airport, take a moment to explore these hidden gems. You might just find yourself falling in love with this place, just like I did.
