From the moment we are introduced to the world, many of the creatures, places, and wonders we learn about come from books, TV screens, or our smartphones. While our ancestors quenched their thirst for knowledge through exploration and travel, we have the privilege and in some cases, the curse of seeing the world from the comfort of our homes. Yet, nothing compares to the thrill of experiencing something firsthand, especially when it’s something you’ve only ever seen in pictures.

The Magic of Seeing Things for the First Time Live

No matter how much we prepare ourselves, witnessing something in reality that we’ve admired from afar is an exhilarating experience. Whether it’s seeing a lion in the wild or marveling at an iconic landmark, these moments provide a sense of validation and assurance, turning dreams into tangible memories.

This was exactly the feeling I had when I visited the VGP Marine Kingdom in Chennai. Yes, I’ve seen fish before—but not like this. The experience of seeing these aquatic creatures alive and up close was nothing short of mesmerizing. It was a lively and refreshing escape from the mid-summer heat.

India’s First Tunnel Aquarium: VGP Marine Kingdome

In 2019, VGP Marine Kingdom made waves as India’s first tunnel aquarium, creating a buzz that captivated the city of Chennai, which is really really cool. For those of us who have only seen such attractions on Discovery Channel or in movies, having one so close to home felt like a dream come true. Let me tell you how I felt, I was having an urge, an uncontrollable urge to witness something beautiful which I have thought all along would be able to witness only if I travel abroad.

My visit to the Marine Kingdom on May 1, 2019, with my dad, was nothing short of extraordinary. We arrived early, avoiding the crowds, and paid Rs. 500 each for entry. The interior design was stunning, with blue hues reminiscent of the ocean greeting us at every turn.

Exploring the Themed Pathway: A Walk Through the Ocean’s Wonders

The adventure begins as you walk along a themed pathway, lined with fish tanks showcasing the Earth’s artistic creations. The vibrant and photogenic fishes were captivating, and if you’re lucky enough to visit when it’s not crowded, you might even form a connection with some of them. I certainly did!

Highlights of the VGP Marine Kingdom: Four Must-See Attractions

Photographic Spots: Throughout the aquarium, you’ll find cleverly designed photo spots that make it look like you’re peeking into the tanks from below. While I regretted not trying it myself, it’s definitely a fun experience—just be prepared to compete for your turn!

Stingray Tank & Jelly Fish Tank: The stingrays here put on quite a show, gracefully flying through the water and occasionally splashing visitors with droplets as they leap above their spacious tank. Now there is also a Jelly fish tank, which is quite a colourful light show.

The Tunnel Experience: The most extraordinary part of the visit is undoubtedly the tunnel. Walking through it, with schools of fish swimming overhead, is a surreal experience. Take your time here—don’t rush, as it’s an experience you won’t want to end. I noticed that adults seemed even more excited than the children around them!

The Moving Walkway and Large Aquarium Window: After finishing our first walkthrough, my dad and I went through the tunnel again, and this time, we discovered the moving walkway—perfect for tired legs. Finally, we reached the large aquarium window, where we watched schools of fish being fed by a diver in an oxygen suit, who waved at us. You can even try scuba diving here if you’re feeling adventurous!

VGP Marine Kingdom: A Therapeutic Experience

The VGP Marine Kingdom isn’t just a place to learn about marine life—it’s a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. I was feeling low before my visit, but the therapeutic atmosphere lifted my spirits and left me feeling refreshed.
