Pointers to Buy the Right Dressing Table (or Vanity): What You Need to Know Before Buying

Finding the right dressing table or vanity is more than just a purchase; it’s about investing in a piece of furniture that meets your needs, complements your style, and offers long-lasting durability.

For the past two years, I’ve taken my skincare and haircare routines to a whole next level. What started with a simple aloe moisturizer from Faceshop has evolved into a full-blown collection of sheet masks, hair serums, face serums, nail polish, toners, perfumes and lipsticks. Though I’m not diving deep into color cosmetics, I’m all about setting a solid skincare routine.

But here’s the thing—my ever-growing collection of skincare treasures was living in a drawer and a small table in my parents’ room. It was only a matter of time before disaster struck, and sure enough, I ended up breaking a lip oil which i bought recently. And I realised, It was time to get serious and buy a dressing table.

So, I embarked on my journey to find the perfect dressing table. Based on my experience, here are the top 10 things you need to know before buying a dressing table or vanity.

Top 10 Things To Know Before Buying A Dressing Table or Vanity

1. Know Your Space

Before you even think about shopping, measure the space where you plan to put your dressing table. This will help you avoid any disappointments later on. Dressing tables in India come in various sizes and designs, from compact vanities for small bedrooms to expansive pieces with ample storage. Knowing your space ensures you pick something that fits well and complements your room’s layout.

2. Consider Your Storage Needs

With skincare and makeup trends booming in India, storage has become a top priority for many. Are you like me, with a growing collection of skincare and haircare products? Then storage is key. Look for a dressing table with enough drawers, shelves, or cabinets to keep everything organized and within reach. Many modern designs incorporate smart storage solutions like hidden compartments and modular drawers. I didn’t get one with the lock. If you have children around at home, it’s best to have a vanity with a lock.

3. Think About a Seater

Comfort is important! If you plan to spend time doing your skincare routine or makeup, make sure your dressing table comes with a cushioned seater. Many contemporary designs now include ergonomic seating options, catering to the growing demand for comfort in Indian households. Nothing match the comfort of sitting on your cushioned seater and doing night skin care routine after a long day before sleeping.

4. Material Matters

The material of your dressing table affects not just the look but also the durability. Wood, particularly teak and rosewood, remains a popular choice in India for its durability and classic appeal. However, you’ll also find options in MDF, particleboard, and even metal, catering to different budgets and aesthetics. I went with rosewood for its quality and finish, and I couldn’t be happier.

5. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

The mirror is a crucial part of any dressing table. Some come with built-in mirrors, while others allow you to add your own. In India, dressing tables often feature large, ornate mirrors, but minimalist designs with clean lines are also trending. Make sure it’s the right size and positioned well for your needs.

6. Check the Quality of Construction

The last thing you want is a dressing table that wobbles or feels flimsy. Check the build quality, especially the joints and the drawer mechanisms. It should feel sturdy and well-constructed. With Indian craftsmanship being a selling point, look for brands that emphasize quality and durability in their furniture.

7. Aesthetics and Style

Your dressing table should match your room’s decor. Whether you prefer something modern, vintage, or minimalist, there’s something out there for everyone. In India, traditional designs with intricate carvings are still popular, but there’s also a growing trend towards sleek, modern designs with a Scandinavian touch. I was initially drawn to a fancy-looking Rumoi Dressing Table in Cappuccino Finish, but aesthetics alone weren’t enough.

8. Budget Wisely

Set a budget before you start shopping. It’s easy to get carried away with all the beautiful options out there. Dressing tables in India can range from a few thousand rupees to lakhs, depending on the material, craftsmanship, and brand. My budget was around 6-7K, and I managed to find something perfect for 5.8K.

9. Delivery and Assembly Services

Always check if the store or online platform offers delivery and assembly services. This can save you a lot of hassle. With the increase in online shopping in India, it’s crucial to ensure that the seller offers reliable delivery and assembly. As I learned the hard way, make sure they deliver all the parts!

10. Read Reviews and Ask for Recommendations

Whether shopping online or in-store, take the time to read reviews and ask friends or family for recommendations. This can give you a heads-up about potential issues. In India, word of mouth and online reviews play a significant role in decision-making, so use them to your advantage.

Which Type of Dressing Table is Right for You?

When it comes to choosing the right dressing table, one size doesn’t fit all. Different types of dressing tables suit different needs, styles, and spaces. Here’s a quick guide to help you choose:

Compact Dressing Tables: Ideal for small spaces or minimalist decor, these often come with just a mirror and a couple of drawers. Perfect for someone with limited storage needs or a small collection of products. These are great for young professionals or students living in urban apartments. (Compact Dressing Table Reference)

Full-Length Dressing Tables: These come with a tall mirror and more storage space, including drawers and cabinets. Suitable for someone who needs ample storage and enjoys having a full-length mirror for getting ready. This type is popular among fashion enthusiasts and those with a more extensive wardrobe. Wall-Mounted Dressing Tables: If you’re short on floor space, a wall-mounted dressing table is an excellent option. These are usually minimalist and modern, making them a perfect fit for contemporary homes. They are ideal for urban dwellers who need to maximize space without compromising on style. Vintage Dressing Tables: For those who love a touch of nostalgia, vintage dressing tables with ornate designs and rich wood finishes are perfect. These are often made from solid wood like teak or rosewood and come with intricate carvings. They’re great for people who appreciate classic, timeless furniture and have room for a more substantial piece. (Reference of Vintage Dressing table)

Multi-Functional Dressing Tables: These are designed to serve more than one purpose, often doubling as a writing desk or having additional storage for books and stationery. Ideal for small spaces or those who want to make the most of their furniture. They’re great for busy professionals or students who need a multifunctional workspace. Types of Wood to Consider Before Choosing A Dressing Table

The type of wood used in a dressing table not only affects its appearance but also its durability and maintenance. Here are some common options:

Teak Wood: Known for its durability and resistance to termites, teak wood is a popular choice for dressing tables in India. It has a rich, warm color and is often used in traditional designs. Will be on the expensive side starting from 15K.

Rosewood (Sheesham): Rosewood is another durable option, known for its deep reddish-brown color and unique grain patterns. It’s a favorite for both traditional and modern furniture in India.

MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard): MDF is an engineered wood product that is more affordable than solid wood. It’s lightweight and easy to work with, making it a common choice for modern, budget-friendly dressing tables. And it will be finished with teak wood or rosewood colours to give authentic feel.

Particle Board: This is the most budget-friendly option, made from compressed wood particles. While not as durable as solid wood, it’s a popular choice for inexpensive furniture.

Taking Care of Your Dressing Table

Once you’ve invested in a beautiful dressing table, it’s important to take care of it to ensure it lasts for years. Here are some tips:

  • Regular Dusting: Dust your dressing table regularly with a soft, dry cloth to prevent dust buildup, which can scratch the surface over time.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the wood to fade or crack. Place your dressing table away from direct sunlight or use curtains to block the rays.
  • Use Coasters and Mats: If you’re placing perfumes, oils, or other liquids on your dressing table, use coasters or mats to prevent spills from damaging the wood.
  • Polish Occasionally: Depending on the type of wood, occasional polishing with a suitable wood polish can keep your dressing table looking shiny and new.
  • Handle with Care: Be gentle with drawers and handles to avoid unnecessary wear and tear. If you notice any loose joints or handles, fix them promptly to prevent further damage.

My Pepperfry Experience: A Lesson Learned

My first attempt at buying a dressing table was through Pepperfry. I ordered the Rumoi Dressing Table, excited about its stylish look and cushioned seat. But when it arrived, the delivery guy failed to check if all the parts were included. Spoiler alert: they weren’t. The carpenter who came to assemble it quickly noticed a main piece was missing.

What followed was a week of frustrating back-and-forth with customer support, only to be told that the missing part wasn’t available. They eventually took the table back, but not without deducting some amount from the refund—absolutely pathetic. It turns out I’m not alone; many Pepperfry customers have faced similar issues. So, consider this a red flag!

Pothys Furniture Showroom, Chromepet- Review

After the Pepperfry fiasco, I decided to visit stores in person. I explored several options, from premium outlets like Royal Oak and Home Centre to traditional stores like Saravana and Jeyachandran. But it was at Pothys Furniture that I found my perfect match.

The showroom is situated behind Pothys in Chromepet, well maintained, and all the furniture collections showcased were good too. You could expect to see products that are of high quality. The dressing table I bought at Pothys is everything I wanted—well-furnished, high-quality, and under budget. It’s made of engineered wood with rosewood finish, it is a full-length drssing table. Has a drawer and a cabinet, and even includes a cushioned seater. Feels durable as well. At just 5.8K, it’s more than I could have asked for.

The staff at Pothys were incredibly helpful, guiding me through their selection and ensuring I found exactly what I needed. The quality and service were top-notch, and they delivered and assembled the table on the same day. But you can’t expect good deal of offers at Pothys compared to places like Jeyachandran, and also slightly disappointed by the fact they charged 150 for delivering the product and place it considering that my home is less than 8KM from the showroom.

The Final Takeaway

Whether you’re drawn to the modern minimalist trends or prefer a more traditional look, remember to consider factors like space, storage, material, and comfort. And as my experience shows, sometimes it’s worth visiting physical stores to get a real feel for the quality and service.

While online shopping platforms like Pepperfry might offer convenience, they also come with risks—missing parts, poor customer service, and potential headaches. On the other hand, a store like Pothys Furniture not only delivers on quality but also on service, making the entire shopping experience smooth and satisfying.

So, take your time, do your research, and choose a dressing table that you’ll love for years to come. Happy shopping!
